On my short trip to Marrakech I didn’t want to miss the Moroccan food. It’s a mix of fresh local vegetables, meat and a lot of spices such as garlic and balsamic. You can plunge straight into the different flavors, spices and diversity of Moroccan food when you are in the Medina of Marrakech.

At every corner you find a nice café, restaurant or markets that sell local food. And I can tell you, you won’t be disappointed! It was fantastic walking along the streets, smelling the spices and buying some fresh fruits.

Besides the big offer of food that you can buy and enjoy all over Marrakech, I recommend doing a cooking class to learn how to cook like a Moroccan. It has two benefits. First, you get in touch with locals. And second, you learn something for your lifetime. If you enjoyed it, you could cook it over and over again at your home country. I think that’s one of the best souvenirs you can take back home.

Cooking Class in Marrakech

For my cooking class I chose the Earth Café. It’s located in an old riad in the southern medina and was opened in 2007 as the first organic café. If you walk through the small inconspicuous door, you will come along the open kitchen until you suddenly find yourself in the middle of the restaurant. The walls are lovely painted and the seats are very comfortable and cozy.

The café has two floors which offer a lot of space for having a great lunch or dinner. The cooking class at the Earth Café costs about 200 MAD (18€/ 21$) to learn how to cook like a Moroccan and to enjoy good and healthy food.

Siham, Hassna and Hajiba are the women who made my day. They are very kind people, helped me with everything and made me feel like a chief cook. They said „Chief Verena“ over and over again which always made me laugh.

But let me get back to the main thing: cooking! I could choose one of the vegetarian and vegan meals from the menu and decided for the veggie burger.

Let the cooking class begin…

One of the three women helped me put an apron and some gloves on to provide hygiene and not to get dirty. After that, we went straight to the kitchen which is located just at the entrance. There I got to slice vegetables and put them in a pan.

It was very hot in the kitchen, but Siham, Hassna and Hajiba made me forget about everything and reminded me how fun cooking can be. I tossed the vegetables with the pan up in the air and subsequently rolled three patties until they were in a good shape for coming into another pan. Now the vegetables and the patties could sizzle until they were done and ready for the plate.

Cooking in the kitchen

It was amazing how well everything worked and it was so sad how fast it came to an end. The cooking class took about 30 minutes which is not very long, but it’s an easy meal and perfect when you want to cook something really fast.

After I had eaten my delicious self-cooked lunch, I was probably the happiest girl in Marrakech. It was so much fun with the three women and I really had a good time with them. Find here the whole recipe.

For the arrangement:

8. When the vegetables and patties are all good, put the vegetables on a plate first.

9. Add the patties by placing them on the top.

10. Now enjoy your delicious meal! 🙂

Wow, that looks delicious and I can’t believe how inexpensive it was! I dream about one day making it to Africa and eating my way through the continent. Even though your class was only about 30 minutes, look at the meal that you were able to create, and the memories that you’ll take with you! What an amazing experience!

Looks like fun! I have to admit I know nothing about Mocroccan cuisine so this is such a great way to get to know a bit more about their cooking style. Love that this was the first organic cafe in Marrakech. Hopefully there are many more now.
